Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers are a popular way of regaining plump, youthful, smooth and supported skin. Minimally invasive, this injectable treatment will enhance, hydrate and restore volume loss, as well as soften fine to moderate wrinkles without surgery. One of the key effects of ageing is volume loss. Dermal fillers made from HA (Hyaluronic Acid) are an excellent cosmetic treatment to support your own natural beauty. We can correct, complement and enhance a range of common facial concerns including:

  • Lip Enhancement – to create volume in the lips, whether you start with a small lip or whether you have lost the volume of the lip with age. We can also help to balance the asymmetries of the lips.

  • Under Eye – tear trough hollows.

  • Cheek Fillers – as we age the face gradually loses fat, bone mass and muscle tone, causing our cheeks to ‘deflate’. Fillers are used in this area under the skin to give back what you have lost and to give you a natural-looking result. This often results in a more youthful appearance with nobody knowing why.

  • Chin Enhancement – Again with aging, the lower face changes and can result in a jowl-type appearance. Filler to the chin and the surrounding area can assist with this concern. We can also project and enhance naturally small chins giving an overall more balanced look to the face.

  • Moderate – Deep wrinkles and fine lines – filler is placed just under the skin to help plump out fine lines and deeper wrinkles.

  • Marionette lines – the lines around the sides of the mouth are a common concern with a lot of people. Dermal filler can assist in softening these and supporting the surrounding structures of the face.

Over 20 collective years of injecting experience has allowed us to selected a range of dermal fillers that complement your specific concerns for the best outcome. Hyaluronic Acid (or HA) is a non-permanent, gel-based product that, if necessary, can be dissolved. Hyaluronic Acid is a substance that naturally occurs in our bodies.

Dermal filler treatments incur minimal downtime.

  • After a thorough consultation with your nurse, areas of concern will be discussed to create an appropriate treatment plan. After a consent is signed and photos taken you will be prepped for your filler – makeup removed and antiseptic applied to prevent infection.

A very fine needle or cannula will be used to insert the Dermal Filler to the appropriate area. Topical anaesthetic is sometimes used in sensitive areas such as the lip. If required, we also offer a dental block anaesthetic which will completely numb your lips. All the Dermal Fillers we use at The Skin Department have a numbing agent in them to provide a comfortable procedure.

We recommend not wearing makeup or going to the gym post procedure. This will minimise infection and bruising.

Your nurse will discuss your post-care at the time of procedure.

  • Your results are instant and you will see how it looks straight away. However, there is always some settling of the filler with slight swelling and/or bruising that may distort the final result. Usually, this settles around 3-7 days.

  • Hyaluronic Acid dermal fillers are deemed to be the safest. Especially those that have been FDA approved as multiple studies have been done to get this stamp of approval. These can be dissolved if necessary with a product called Hyalase. It will turn the Dermal Filler into a watery substance that your body will expel.

The most common side effects of HA Dermal Fillers are swelling, bruising and tenderness at the site of injection. These are all temporary and will settle in a few days normally.

Rare side effects include the occlusion of a vessel. This requires dissolving of the filler with Hyalase. At The Skin Department, we carry at all times a good supply of Hyalase to be able to reverse this potential side effect immediately.

Internationally, there have been some extremely rare cases of blindness. There are areas that are at higher risk for this, such as the nose and frown areas, although no area is deemed “safe”. At The Skin Department, we do not offer this procedure in high-risk areas.
